If you’re an emotional eater, you might have spent a lot of your life trying to stick to a diet or workout routine created by someone else only to keep feeling like you fail. This can grind down your sense of self-trust: you keep trying to live by the rules of others, not trusting your inner voice, and you keep feeling like you’re breaking promises to yourself by not following through.
Talk about being stuck in a loop!
It is time to start rebuilding your self-trust, an inner knowing that you are capable and have preferences. But how can you do that if you’ve been ignoring your inner voice for so long? Try thinking about how you support the people in your life who you love and then apply it to yourself. You might find that it feels easier to trust and show up for others than it is to show yourself the same level of support and compassion.
Here are a few specifics to think about:
Keep a promise to yourself. Start off with little things like setting the intention to brush your teeth before bed or trying to get 300 more steps in a day. Showing up for yourself in these ways can really add up! You’re learning to believe you’re capable of supporting yourself.
Tap into your intuition. Find low-stakes ways to start stepping into your intuition. For example, ask yourself what you really want to eat for dinner. Is it pasta or potatoes? Cold sushi or hot roast chicken? Then follow through on giving yourself what you want. Check in with yourself after too: how satisfied were you by the experience?
Get quiet with your gut. If you’re someone who is swayed by the opinions of others or wants to hear all the feedback before making a decision (hello Googling!), feel free to continue do this as you grow your confidence. But add this step: after you’ve heard what others have to say, and before taking any action, let all the ideas sit for a bit. Then evaluate how you feel about the various suggestions you received, and then take the one that feels best to you!
Trusting yourself isn’t about having all the answers, but having an inner knowing that no matter what comes up you can navigate it. It means making decisions from a place of knowing yourself, this can make you feel empowered to set boundaries, say “no”, and even stop eating foods you don’t enjoy. And if your inner critic pops up, you can thank it for its feedback and then let it know you’ve got this!
By listening and honouring yourself more and more you’ll gain trust in yourself! Stepping into that power can encourage you to show up more authentically which can make life feel oh so much more fulfilling!
