4 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Mental Health

Have you ever noticed that when you wipe down the kitchen you immediately feel a sense of calm? Or maybe you love to light a candle during the cold, dark winter months. These are great examples of how small alterations to your environment can boost your mood in seconds. And we recommend finding more ways to add these things to your every day! It is a great way to tailor your environment, stack the deck if you will, to bring more joy and relaxation into your daily life.

You might think: “I don’t have the budget to upgrade my house!” While of course we’d all love to decorate or renovate our homes to fit our ideal dreams, you don’t have to go all out (and drop a lot of money) to see mental health benefits. You can try:

  1. Sparkle and shine. Let’s face it: cleaning the entire house feels overwhelming! Instead, shift your focus and make it your goal to clean only one room in your house. We suggest choosing the one you spend the most time in, so you get the most recharging bang for your buck so to speak. Or maybe you may even feel bold enough to tackle a closet!

  1. Little luxuries. Think about what items you can buy that won’t break the bank but feel like a luxury! Maybe that’s a new bath towel that is fluffy and wraps all the way around your body or underwear that makes you feel comfortable and confident. But don’t just limit this to your home! If it’s your workspace that needs a pick-me-up try adding to your desk: a plant, a photo of a loved one, or even change your computer background to your favourite travel destination!

  1. Small annoyances. Consider things that your brain ‘snags’ on throughout your day. For example, are all your hair ties stretched out and near breaking? Pick up some new ones. Do you hate putting on your shoes because they pinch your right toes? Find a new pair that feels good and fits your budget. You won’t realize how much these little frustrations are taking up space in your brain until they are dealt with!

  1. Creating mental space. Spring cleaning for your mental health isn’t just about physical things. You might even think about how you can ‘clean up’ or streamline your mental space! That could look like unfollowing people on social media who don’t inspire you or lift you up (don’t forget about the mute function!) or even stop watching shows and reading books that leave you feeling sad and defeated (need some book recommendations that feel good, click here!). You can even try out creating a short to do list every morning and see how that shapes your day and creates more mental room.

No matter which on this list you choose to try out, you’ll find that making subtle shifts and changes in your environment can clear your mind of some worries and leave you feeling cared for.

💛 Your peace awaits.
